A Mouth Guard for Tongue Posture
The Functional Activator is a tongue posture trainer. It guides your tongue up to rest against the roof of your mouth, and its closed shape encourages you to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth. Daily training, no exercises to learn.
How to use your Functional Activator
Follow these simple steps.
-
Start Gradually
Give your mouth time to adapt to your mewing mouth guard.
Start with 15 to 20 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day. Increase your wear time gradually as the Functional Activator becomes more familiar.
-
Relax, Don't Bite
Let the tongue posture device do the work.
Place the Functional Activator comfortably in your mouth. Keep your jaw relaxed and your lips gently closed. You do not need to clench or bite down to keep it in place.
-
Tongue Up. Breathe Through Your Nose.
This is the tongue posture you are working toward.
Let your tongue rest gently against the roof of your mouth, with your lips closed and your jaw relaxed. Breathe through your nose comfortably rather than forcing the position.
Choose the size that fits your mouth.
One measurement decides it. Take the reading, find the row it falls in, and that row is your size. If the reading sits on a boundary, the full guide shows how to resolve it.
| Small | 33 millimetres or less | Younger users or smaller mouth size. |
| Medium | 34 to 37 millimetres | Most adults. Fits the majority. |
| Large | 38 millimetres or more | Larger mouth size or broader jaw. |

Frequently asked questions
Can I sleep with the Functional Activator?
Yes, and sleeping in it is the goal. Your tongue spends the whole night in whatever position it falls into, so the hours you're asleep are where the Functional Activator does most of its work. Wear it for short periods during the day until it feels familiar, then move it to bedtime and keep it in through the night.
Where should your tongue rest when you sleep?
Your tongue rests gently against the roof of your mouth, with your lips closed and your breathing going through your nose. Holding that position is possible while you're awake and paying attention, but as everything relaxes during sleep, the tongue can drop and the lips can part. The Functional Activator is shaped to guide the tongue up and keep the mouth sealed through the night.
Is this more efficient than mewing?
Mewing means keeping your tongue on the roof of your mouth, which takes constant attention during the day and isn't possible to do on purpose while you sleep. The Functional Activator's double-arch shape guides your tongue into that position, and because it is sealed with no breathing holes, your breathing moves through your nose while you wear it. Since the device holds the position for you, the training continues during the hours you can't think about it.
How is a tongue posture device different from a regular mouth guard?
A regular mouth guard is built to protect your teeth, while a tongue posture device is shaped to place your tongue. The Functional Activator is made from flexible, BPA-free silicone with a double-arch design that guides the tongue up to the roof of the mouth, and its closed shape keeps your breathing through your nose. It adapts to the width of your mouth as soon as you release it, with no boiling or molding.
Can I use it instead of mouth tape?
Tape closes your lips from the outside and leaves your tongue wherever it happens to fall. The Functional Activator works from the inside: it guides your tongue to the roof of your mouth and, with no breathing holes, keeps your breathing through your nose, with nothing stuck to your skin.
How do I know which size to choose?
Measure from canine to canine using dental floss, then lay the floss against a ruler. A measurement of 33 mm or less is Small, 34 to 37 mm is Medium, and 38 mm or more is Large. If your measurement sits on a boundary, the full size guide on this page shows how to decide.
